Yes that is correct – 3D Blu-ray for the PS3. Basically existing PS3 owners will be able to download a firmware update that will allow the PS3 to play the new 3D Blu-ray discs at full 1080p resolution. This is currently the only existing Blu-ray player that is going to get this upgrade saving users the cost of buying a new 3D Blu-ray player.
You will need a new 3D-compatible TV and glasses
The new 3D Blu-ray format uses active shutter 3D glasses and requires one of the new 3D HDTVs which were recently announced. Some of the TV manufacturers are even bundling the glasses with the new TVs and we’ve heard that you may need to cough up to $100 for the glasses.
Don’t expect more than a smidgeon of 3D Blu-ray movies in 2010
Sony is promising that “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” will be available by summer 2010, Disney reckons “A Christmas Carol” by the end of the year, and Dreamworks says “Monsters vs. Aliens” in 2010–and that’s about it. More announcements could be coming, but we’re guessing there won’t be many 3D Blu-ray titles in 2010.
So what about 3D gaming on the PS3?
So you can watch 3D movies – you can do that at the cinema – what is really awesome is the potential that 3D has on games! Below is a clip from CES 2009 where you can see what 3D gaming is like. Worth keeping your eye on
