Dead Island is a game that has been “in the making” for several years now. Most people have probably never heard about it. The game was originally announced in 2007, but has never really gotten off the ground. That all changed when Deep Silver took over and got things running again (with a November 2011 release cited).
The main question is: how do you take a troubled, forgotten zombie game, in an industry saturated with the blood of the undead, and grab the attention of gamers worldwide? The answer: make a really really good trailer.
What they did is hire a company called Axis Animation and had them make an outstanding trailer. Axis Animation, like Blur Studios and a handful of other animation companies, is an independent group hired by developers and publishers to create trailers and in-game animations for upcoming games.
Within 24 hours of release, the Dead Island trailer was viewed by over 1 million people, creating a huge stir online and even in Hollywood, where everyone is fighting to secure the movie rights.
