Google Algorithm to filter out sites with too many ads

Do you have a lot of ads on your website? Google‘s new and improved search algorithm, which is designed to favour sites that maintain a good balance of content and ads, could automatically filter it out of search results pages. The change comes after complaints of searches regularly turning up sites that have loads of ads and minimal content.

The search engine will show more high-quality websites by downgrading pages that display too many ads, according to a blog post from Google engineer Matt Cutts. High-quality sites will also be rewarded, encouraging “a healthy web ecosystem.”

Personally I think this is great, I’m tired of finding pages that have hardly any content on or require you t click through15 pages to read the full article while blinding you with crappy flashing banner ads. It’s ironic however that 98% of those crappy banner ads are through Google’s own content network… Anyway, check out this video from Mashable with some more info about the changes:

I think it’s a good idea. Website owners (including Google) need to strike a healthy balance between content and advertising. It can be sickening and nauseating when our beloved Internet begins to look like Las Vegas…

Agreed! Great idea. Studies have shown many people ignore ads anyway and seek the information they need in the actual editorial of a site.

Nice blog, will keep checking back ^_^

I totally agree, as a website owner you need to be mindful of what your user experience is. I guess a lot of sites really don’t care.
