South African Mobile Statistics

Want to know how South African’s use mobile? Here is a great infographic with all the country specific statistics for SA.

We know how hard it is to find good research on mobile usage in SA. This is a great little infographic has been created by Grant Barnard and Elizabeth Joss of Xcellent Media, an online media and marketing company in Cape Town. It gives a good account of how South Africans use their mobile phones and shows a few really interesting statistics. The main ones for me are:

  • There were 8.5 million internet users in South Africa at the end of 2011, a number which is projected to grow to 25 million by 2020
  • E-commerce is growing at a rate of 30% per year, and it’s not going to slow down any time soon
  • 95% of subscribers have remained with their network for around 4.2 years
  • 70% of mobile subscribers do not own a landline!
