Wired has obtained the first ever set of screenshots from the much anticipated graphics engine Epic Games is preparing for the next round of consoles. Wired were privy to a demo reel that was shown to some of the top level execs at Sony and Microsoft. Today’s PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles are in their sixth and seventh years on the market, respectively, the current hardware is reaching the end of its life cycle and is now easily outclassed by top end PCs. The Xenos graphics processor in the Xbox 360 can handle roughly 240 billion floating point operations per second; the latest high-end processors for PCs can handle around 3 trillion. Not surprisingly, speculation has been ramping up for several years about the next wave of game consoles. Sony and Microsoft are still hush hush on their next gen console plans. However the wizards at Epic have been hard at work on the engine that will power this new generation of consoles. It’s called Unreal Engine 4, and as it’s predecessors will forge the way forward in gaming on consoles. “There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of our engine team and our studio to drag this industry into the next generation,” says Cliff Bleszinski, Epic’s design director. “It is up to Epic, and Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it—even if they don’t know they want it.” We have some of these Unreal 4 screenshots below, for more info and images head to Wired.

I’m a huge fan of the Ridge Racer series. HUGE. When I was eleven and a young whippersnapper I spent my last R50 that I would see for two months on Ridge Racer Type 4, the fourth and last title in the successful series on the Playstation One. I played it to death and love the game and the dynamics it introduced, even looking back at it today and seeing how far ahead of the times it was. I went through the subsequent sequels with a bit of trepidation (I didn’t buy all of them). For a series that managed to create an emotional connection to the player and the car, even the team he/she was driving for, it dissolved into another arcade racer as time went by. A good arcade racer, but nevertheless something a little on the bland side of actually doing anything to improve the genre. Its popularity was later usurped as the fifth installment on the PS3 was overrun by Need For Speed, Racedriver: GRID and the huge surprise raised by Codemasters in the form of DiRT. Bandai Namco went off the radar a bit and returns this year with their new title, Unbounded. But even for a demo, I’m still not a fan of the storyline Unbounded presents. Over the years, the Need For Speed series dropped storylines for alternating games, trying to find a formula they could stick with. The last time I enjoyed the backstory was Most Wanted and its successor, Carbon, only had insane drifting to save its skin. Prostreet had a mostly unintrusive backstory that you were a popular illegal street racer taking to the tracks to rip some new holes, legally. NFS Undercover’s premise of being part of a sting operation into illegal street racing and Detective Chase Lingh was about as convincing as a cracker with Cheese Marmite trying to pass itself off as the real thing. I haven’t played The Run yet, but I’m told it’s a lot like Driver and Hot Pursuit thrown together. Hot Pursuit lets you know that you’re playing as two people: a cop, and an illegal street racer, which is a bit like playing Spy vs Spy, except you’re both spies at the same time and you can’t really have one side win. On a side-note, I played both Driver II and Hot Pursuit II back when I was more vertically challenged. Both were great. Both are the real meat of their respective series. Driver II was also the last game in the series that I really enjoyed, save for Driver: San Francisco because I haven’t bought it yet. I had high hopes for Ridge Racer Unbounded. I even played the demo this weekend and slowly learned about the game and its mechanics, but I can already tell that the storyline is there, and it’s going to bug me – its Carbon all over again, where you win races, dominate areas and eventually win over the whole city. There’s a group of people who stand on top of buildings that gaze off into the distance and tell you things about your races and the areas you’re conquering. Maybe they give you Noddy badges for winning, I don’t know. It’s a mixture of Burnout, Carbon and Wipeout and it may prove to be a winning formula in the end for some. The custom track editor is pure madness and some of the custom ones already online are insanely detailed. Gameplay-wise, I don’t have much to complain about. I play way too many racing games, and the cars handle as naturally as possible in a world with funny physics and insane drifts. The default controls are arranged as standard – up, down, left and right control the car, Space for handbrake/drift, left Shift to look back and right CTRL to use your boost feature. It’s comfortable enough, but readers may want to change the default to suit their preferred position on the keyboard. There’s no tutorial, so I had to go into the control menu and Google some things before I understood what was going on. You create Boost by drifting, totaling other driver’s cars and destroying key structures with the boost that you’ve built up. It’s simple, but frustrating at times because you don’t get options to target the things you can destroy. You literally have to drive up to 200 meters away from your chosen object and press left CTRL to get the desired effect. If you’re wondering, that leaves you about two seconds if you’re travelling at speeds of 300km/h. Fun times and frantic button bashing are ahead. It’s a good idea, but poorly devised and implemented. Don’t get me wrong, I love racers with destruction elements. I still revisit the underrated Blur every now and then, and I admire how it’s all put together and paced – that’s what Unbounded should have been aiming for. Most Wanted had those giant donuts of fun, Wipeout lets you leave opponents to walk into your traps at blistering speeds. Racing games don’t have to be simulations all the time, but there’s a fine line you straddle between fun and genuine loathing or irritation. Guys like me who love simulators are mainly masochistic, so we don’t mind spending torturous hours on the same license test in Gran Tourismo 5 so long as we get that gold trophy. This is just an appeal to Bandai Namco – make a return to the Ridge Racer series as fans loved it. You don’t have to compete against the big boys, people are already looking for something fun and different. Remake Type 4, if you so please, as I’d like to see Reiko back again and I really want to get better with Dig Dug’s awful car setups. Bring fun into the genre, not an attempt to please everyone while in the same breath compete with the big boys like EA and Codemasters. It’s impossible; you can’t do that without destroying the roots of an impressive series [...]

There are a plethora of photography apps on the App Store. Well, we have tried and tested loads of these apps over the past few years and have put together this simple guide for you. Whether you have just bought a new iPhone or are a seasoned veteran, there is an app here for you. Instagram Impossible to ignore, instagram is a super app that combines a great selection of filters and tools with an excellent community. With Facebook recently buying Instagram for $1 billion it is safe to say that instagram is here to stay. Even for advanced users instagram is a great app that makes sharing to multiple networks so simple. If you are looking to build an audience/following then this is a great place to start. Camera+ Camera+ has been around for quite a while and the team have been consistently improving the app with each update. The app takes excellent photos and combines powerful features with a great inbuilt editing system. Somehow Camera+ manages to squeeze every bit of sharpness out of the iPhone’s sensor to create some truly amazing images. Snapseed Snapseed is a photo editing app that blows the other editing apps out of the water. It has a full suite of advanced tools that allow you to make an average photo into a great one. As with Camera+, the Snapseed team are updating the app with new features constantly and is a must have for anyone who takes their photography seriously. Having said that, the interface is so simple and easy to use it is accessible for any level photographer. iTimeLapse This is a fun app that creates time-lapse videos out of a series of photos. The app allows full control of the duration, intervals, speed and quality of the recorded pics which allows you to create pretty much and sort of time-lapse video you can imagine. It also allows you to add music tracks directly to the video from your iTunes library. Here is a bad example of a video I made: IncrediBooth Another fun app, this one creates a fake photo booth for you to snap pics with you friends. You may think that this is a strange app to be on this list but it’s very good at doing what it says on the box. The app takes 5 quick photos and applies various filters to the photos. What you end up with are some really fun photos that definitely capture the essence of the original photo booths. I use a combination of these apps, for example I use Camera+ to shoot, Snapseed to edit and then Instagram to share. Let us know if there are any other photography apps that you use that we have missed. Follow me on instagram (Matt_ZA) as well as the #iPhoneographySA tag to see some great local South African photos.

The very first Assassin’s Creed gameplay video is out and shows a great deal of what to expect. The video had to be unlocked by fans before it was released. The trailer features in game footage (albeit shot in a very cinematic way) as well as some cool surprises like a full size grizzly bear and a glimpse of the new cover system. The cover system is a first for Assassin’s Creed and helps Connor avoid being blown apart by musket fire. The kills and finishing moves look particularly awesome. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think?

Long rumored and much anticipated, The Elder Scrolls Online is finally being unveiled in the June issue of Game Informer. We got hold of the cover image and the teaser video. The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise,” said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor.
