BMW say that future BMW drivers will be able to integrate their iPod interfaces with their cars main display. So if you drive a Beemer in the future, the menu you see on your iPod will now be popping up on the screen in your car, custom playlists, genius, artists etc.
For many a year now, Apple has been working side by side with automobile manufactures in an attempt to have iPod docking tech offered as a standard in new cars. Along comes iOS 4 and with it this thing called iPod out, what is it, what ever could it be used for? I am so glad you asked! Well in a press release, BMW says that it wants to use iPod out as means to put a users iPod/iPhone interface on future BMW and Mini main displays. What this means is, you will be able to control your device with the cars on board controls without having to fiddle with the device. This will include being able to make playlists and having access to the Genius function.
BMW rekon this will be a way for them to keep up with tech advances from Apple’s ever changing interfaces, people may change their iPod every 2years but they tend to hang onto a car a bit longer so over time the cars will become incapable of keeping up with these changes.
so iPod Out will require the newer toys to work, iPhone 3G, 3GS & Iphone 4, or iPod Touch 2nd & 3rd Gen running iOS4. There is no word on when cars will be produced with iPod Out or whether it will be a factory add on or come standard and also nothing on whether or not existing BMW owners will be able to put in an upgrade to support iPod Out.
Bit of a pitty they aren’t letting us know, but at least its on the cards. So for some of us not in a position to buy a BMW, we know nobody is missing out on anything, haha. That’s called a conciliation prize.
