I can’t believe this. Ubisoft have created an absolutely awesome game in Assassin’s Creed and improved that imeasurably in the sequel Assassin’s Creed 2. Gamers all over the world are totally in love with the work that the Ubisoft team have produced. Until Now.

As Gamers we understand the need for copy protection on games, but that must NEVER come at the cost of the gamers experience of your product. So why have Ubisoft done exactly that?

PC owners have been dying to get their hands on Assassin’s Creed 2 and finally the PC version is available. However, Ubisoft have now included a copy protection system on the PC version that forces users to stay online while they play the game. Yes you heard that correctly… not even Steam attempted this, at worst they made you register online and prove that your copy was legit. Ubisoft now require you to be logged in to their verification server the ENTIRE time you are playing Assassin’s Creed 2!

WTF Ubisoft! Seriously, this may not be a major problem for super first world countries, but a lot of people across the world don’t have access to cheap broadband internet. Even those that do may use a seperate PC for specific gaming instead of the main household PC which is used for web access. So what happens if your ISP is down and you don’t have internet access… or a giant rat chews through your cable…or Ubisofts servers go down… well then no gaming for you, even though you have paid full price for the game.

Ubisoft have stepped out into the realm of darkeness by trying to totally control users, and have a total disregard for gamers in less fortunate parts of the world. This just makes me glad to have an XBOX for games like Assassin’s Creed, but seriously makes me worry about the potential precedent that Ubisoft may have set for other game manufacturers.
